Building Academic Language for ELLs – and all students!
Limited Capacity seats available

You know the saying “Use it or lose it,” right? Well, when it comes to language, we also have to use it to build it. Students who use academic language own it – and succeed in school. In this session you will see examples of how teachers get students talking about the content they are learning, using academic language – sophisticated vocabulary and sentence structure. You will also practice a process for creating the support structures that English learners need to engage in these discussions – and that promote more consistent use of academic language in all students.

Interactive, Conceptual Word Walls: Purposeful Planning
Limited Capacity seats available

Teachers are most likely to improve student learning when they address specific learning outcomes in their planning. Purposeful planning provides teachers with opportunities to plan instructional activities that focus on content standards with fidelity while heeding district and state guidelines. Thus, purposeful planning allows teachers to implement standards-based practices effectively and consistently in their classrooms. It also provides time for teachers to understand academic content vertically, answering the questions of what has been taught, what needs to be taught, and what will be taught in future grades. Finally, it provides structure that encourages teachers to identify essential academic vocabulary and plan how they will support targeted words during instruction. Teachers will learn to look closely at the verbs and content included in the TEKS in order to understand the implied rigor and depth of knowledge requirements. This information will then be used to construct interactive, conceptual word walls and plan powerful, age-appropriate vocabulary building experiences for students. Interactive word walls: Enhancing students’ ability to speak, read, and write about academic experiences.
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Speaking, reading and writing skills are essential to skills. Reading, interpreting, and producing domain-specific text are fundamental practices. Interactive word walls resemble graphic organizers, strategically target academic vocabulary, and are student generated. Interactive word walls build academic vocabulary, reinforce important patterns, while providing an overview of each lesson and unit. They unify related terms and concepts, and visually display connections between vocabulary and experiences. The CER Framework helps student use claims, evidence, and reasoning statements to structure academic talk and writing. Anchor charts, sentence stems, and teacher prompts are pivotal elements in teaching students to apply CER in academic discourse. Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies examples will be included in the presentation. Support is available at www.thesciencetoolkit.com and https://www.facebook.com/thesciencetoolkit/ View an introductory video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuaOjtk9QoM
