This training is for all returning DL teachers or bilingual teachers who are interested in MISD’s dual language program. Participants will understand the foundational components that are expected to be implemented at the beginning of next year for any of our returning DL teachers. Attendees will be provided with models and demonstrations of these strategies and requirements and will walk away with instructional strategies to support their implementation of Phase I in their DL classrooms.
Attendees will be active participants on a model lesson directly aligned to one of the SIOP components. Teachers will examine the lesson plan components linked to comprehensible input presented in the lesson. Brief research discussion on the effectiveness of comprehensible input will be shared.

You know the saying “Use it or lose it,” right? Well, when it comes to language, we also have to use it to build it. Students who use academic language own it – and succeed in school. In this session you will see examples of how teachers get students talking about the content they are learning, using academic language – sophisticated vocabulary and sentence structure. You will also practice a process for creating the support structures that English learners need to engage in these discussions – and that promote more consistent use of academic language in all students.
In this session we will discuss the stages in writing development among K-2 students. We will focus on the writing process (planning/planificación, first draft/primera copia, revise/modificar, edit/corregir, publish/publicar). We will also show various texts that teachers can use as mentor texts. In addition, we will go through the step by step process in which students can personalize their writing journals; teachers will get the opportunity to make their own writing journal. We will give sample schedules that teachers can use for blocking out their writing block.
Learn how to create and use anchor charts as effective, engaging, and student-friendly tools to support instruction for ELLs by reinforcing key concepts, skills, and vocabulary. We will learn how to use an anchor chart drive a lesson/unit, by meaningfully incorporating it throughout the course of the lesson to promote students' academic speaking, writing, and metacognitive skills. With the hands-on practice provided in this workshop, we will be able to begin the school year with the fundamental knowledge and skills to create quality anchor charts.
